Spending Time with God

Time spent with God, is time well spent. We spend time with Jesus because we love Him, we abide there to become more like Him, and we go often to that secret place, as we seek to reflect Him in our lives and leadership.

• Spending time in Prayer:

"One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God." (Luke 6:12, NIV)

"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." (Matthew 6:6-7, NIV)

• Spending time in the Word of God, the Bible:

"How I love your teachings! I think about them all day long." (Psalm 119:97, NCV)

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)

• Spending time in Worship:

"Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!" (Psalm 96:9a, NKJV)

"Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His Name." (Hebrews 13:15, NKJV)

"Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; He is to be feared above all gods." (1 Chronicles 16:23-25, NIV)

• Spending time in God's Presence:

"The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." (Exodus 33:14, NKJV)

"You will show me the path of life; In Your Presence is fullness of joy; At Your right Hand are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm 16:11, NKJV)

Spiritual Disciplines are a Choice

Spending time with God is the foundation of living a life of worship, where decisions, words, deeds, and all other aspects of life are affected. Incorporating spiritual disciplines in one's life (like quiet time) is an intentional choice. It honors God when we choose to make time for Him first—purposefully spending time in His Presence, in His Word, in worship, in prayer.

"Ah, brethren! those of us who have to conduct your devotions strive hard that we may be seen of God in secret when heard of men in public; and I am sure that we never pray so rightly or so usefully for you as when we only remember you in a very inferior sense, but seem to be surrounded as with a cloud, enclosed within the secret place of the Most High, even when we stand supplicating aloud for you in the public assembly of God’s people." —Charles H. Spurgeon
